Glancing over the pages of an international bibliography on 18th-century studies, might give the impression that in East Central Europe the 18th century, all it stands for and the intellectual debates that accompany it, did not happen at all. The present volume sets the record straight. Its authors bear witness to a vivid scene of researchers living and working in regions that were formerly part of the Habsburg Monarchy, stretching well beyond East Central Europe into southern and western parts of the Continent. Their essays, focussing on the central topic of "social change", deal with a broad array of topics including, for instance, the birth-rate of an Alpine region; the schooling system; the emergence of new social strata and the mental changes connected with it; and the position of regional estates versus central state-building. Seen together, these essays testify to the fact that the patterns of the Enlightenment, although originating in the West, certainly spread to other parts of the Continent as well, noting that this did not occur all at once. Rather, the transition occurred at different times and with different intensity so that such impulses were adapted to local circumstances, resulting in multi-facetted manifestations of reform and change.
